Amigurumi Octopus for Beginners

Pattern notes:

This pattern uses US terms

MR - Magic Ring

sc - single crochet (poke into the stitch, pull some yarn back through the stitch, yarn over and pull through both loops.

ss - slip stitch (poke into the stitch yarn over and pull the first loop through the second loop).

ch - chain (yarn over and pull through the loop already on the hook)

inc - increase (2 sc into the same stitch)

dec - decrease (go up the front and into the front loop of the first stitch and up the front and into the front loop of the second stitch and then yarn over and pull back through both loops and then yarn over and go through both loops)

dc - double crochet (yarn over, poke into the stitch, yarn over, pull through the stitch, yarn over pull through two loops, yarn over and then pull through the last two loops)

trc - treble crochet (yarn over twice, poke into the stitch, yarn over, pull through the stitch, yarn over pull through two loops, yarn over pull through two loops and yarn over and pull through the last two loops. 

() with numbers in at the end is how many stitches you should have.

The Octopi's head

Make a magic ring (or chain 4, slip stitch to join)

Round 1: (sc) x 6    (6)

Round 2: (inc) x 6   (12)

Round 3: (sc, inc) x 6  (18)

Round 4: (2sc, inc) x 6  (24)

Round 5: (inc, 3sc ) x 6  (30)

Round 6: (4sc, inc) x 6   (36)

Round 7: (5sc, inc) x 6    (42)

Round 8: (inc, 6sc) x 6    (48)

Round 9, 10 and 11: (sc) x 48  (48)

Round 12: (7sc, inc) x 6   (54)

Round 13, 14, 15 and 16 (sc) x 54  (54)

Round 20: (dec, 6sc) x 6 (42)

Start stuffing octopus

Round 25: FLO (sc, ch 41, in 2nd chain 2DC in each ch, sc in FLO of next st) x 8

Round 26: BLO of round 25, (dec x 8) (8)

Add any extra stuffing needed now.

Row 27: (dec) x 4,                             (4)

Fasten off and sew in ends.

Frill

Using blo of round 16, ensuring octupi’s head is downwards, attach yarn through loop, ((sc, hdc), (dc, trc, dc), (hdc, sc)) x 8, fasten off (I slip stitch back into first loop, before fastening off).

Bow Tie

Using blo of round 16, ensuring octopi’s head is downwards, attach yarn through loop, (sc) x 24, fasten off (I slipstitch back into first loop, before fastening off).

The bow is made separately and then sewn on.

Tighten magic ring and then wrap tail of yarn around bow 4 or 5 times, tie tails together at the back, so that the bow keeps its shape. Then sew the bow into place.

Eyes

I choose to do an upside down ‘U’ with an extra stitch for Noel and a slightly diagonal one for Noelle. I begin the eyes between row 13 and 14 and work upwards.
